Episode 1

An Introduction to The Woodspinner Video Blog series. Kind of a mission statement and a vision for where I’m headed with this series.

Episode 2

Part 1 of the Making a Mug and Shaving Brush Set series. The first episode covers prepping the stock (from a block of thinwin–a relative of wenge) and face turning the shaving mug. This is a companion video to an article that appears in Woodturning Design, Winter 2010, Issue #24.

Episode 3

Part 2 of the Making a Mug and Shaving Brush Set series. This episode covers spindle turning the brush handle. This is a companion video to an article that appears in Woodturning Design, Winter 2010, Issue 24.

Episode 4

Scraper shaping and sharpening. Scrapers straight from the factory typically arrive with a less-than-desirable profile. I’ll show you how to regrind a pair of scrapers to create a left and right bevel set, suitable for scraping both the exterior and interior of open forms.

Episode 5

Turning a tool handle. A tool handle is a basic spindle turning exercise, and a great project for ending up with a very practical product that you can use with pride. I discuss some design considerations, material selection and preparation, and then demonstrate the project. For a little more of a challenge one of the tools requires an extra deep whole in the end-grain of the handle. I’ll show you my solution.

Episode 6

Part 1–Turning a salt and pepper mill set using a crush grind mechanism. I’ve yet to find a good set of instructions that doesn’t leave out some key piece of information! We’ll work through one of those commonly available sets of instructions, and I’ll show you what I’ve learned along the way to make your mill turning experience less painful than my first attempt. The first in this 2 part series covers rough turning the blank(s), drilling the mill body, through shaping and finish-sanding the body.

Episode 7

Part 2–Turning a salt and pepper mill set using a crush grind mechanism. The conclusion of the 2 part series covers drilling the top of the mill to receive the mechanism, through shaping and finish-sanding the top to complete the mill set.

Episode 8

January is a great time to escape the cold of north-central Washington! At the urging of my friend Pete Richardson, I headed down to Florida for a week to check out Pete’s new enterprise, Viable Lumber. Viable Lumber is an urban timber salvage cooperative in the Tampa/St. Petersburg region of the state. Pete and his colleagues have been salvaging some incredible wood–camphor, flamewood, Indian rosewood, live oak, and much, much more. Pete and I spent a day with Steve Parker, owner of Woodturningblanks4U and the sawyer for Viable Lumber. This video shares some of that experience and is a companion to an upcoming (early 2011) article I wrote for in American Woodturner.
